5/7/10 - Redistricting Game

So what is Gerrymandering anyway?

The Redistricting Game is designed to educate, engage, and empower citizens around the issue of political redistricting. By playing the game, you will learn about redistricting fundamentals, gerrymandering, the Voting Rights Act, and potential reforms.

The game was developed by the University of Southern California (USC) Game Innovation Lab, part of the USC School of Cinematic Arts’ Interactive Media Division.

Your assignment is to complete mission 1,2,3 & 5.

In the comment section please share your opinion on the educational value of this game.

Did it help you to better understand gerrymandering and redistricting?  Do you think I should continue to use it in Civics next year?  Why or why not?

  3. Ah, this game really did help me understand gerrymandering. It was pretty fun for me, just one big puzzle.
And CamCam, you should DEFINATELY, continue this next year. It better explains it than anyone could do with words, and its a bit funner than listening to people talking.

  5. While I was playing the game I did try to understand the game and what exactly gerrymanding meant. But throughout the three days that we played it I still did not understand it. I do get that gerrymanding is the dividing of district lines, but I still don't understand why the population and the number of democrates and repulicans matter.

I do think that you should still use this game in the future years. I feel that it will help a lot of the students understand it more. If not though, try to understand the game more and help them more. It was a good experience I did like it. It's frustrating but it does help in a way.

  6. I was playing this game it made me mad, I got really mad and irritated when i could not pass and i would try like 300 times. I tried to understand Gerrymanderung while i was playing this game but it is kind of confusing to remember all the rules and when its okay to break them and when its not.
I think that you should keep doing this game it did help and it was fun, but irritating it just teaches us that it can be hard and funny at the same time.

  7. The first couple levels I personally didnt think that they helped us understand very much, but when it got into having to keep the population a certain number, and the percent of republicans/democrats 55% or more, it really started to help you understand more about the gerrymandering. My favorite level was number 5 when you coudn't see what the populations average of either republican or democrat.

  8. Yes, I better understand the whole “point” of Gerrymandering now because of the redistricting game. It proved how hard it is to redistrict and still play by the rules to get approved when the time comes around. It’s a very challenging game and you have to really put your mind to it to accomplish the missions and goals, but you definitely should use this game with your classes next year so they can better understand Gerrymandering too.

  9. The game made me more confused about redistricting. I do not think you should continue this and instead just show a movie
