1/22/10 - Technology

The Digital Life...

Researchers once thought that the use of electronic devices among children and teenagers could not go up. They were wrong:

The average young American now spends practically every waking minute — except for the time in school — using a smart phone, computer, television or other electronic device, according to a new study from the Kaiser Family Foundation...

While most of the young people in the study got good grades, 47 percent of the heaviest media users — those who consumed at least 16 hours a day — had mostly C’s or lower, compared with 23 percent of those who typically consumed media three hours a day or less. The heaviest media users were also more likely than the lightest users to report that they were bored or sad, or that they got into trouble, did not get along well with their parents and were not happy at school.

Read the rest of the article and then comment on your own media usage.  Are you above or below the average?  Do you think this trend of increased use of electronic devices is good or bad?  What are the positive and negative aspects of this trend in our society?

  2. I am always on my cell phone and usualy always have my ipod with me.i think i am above adverage because i think i use my cell phone more then 7 to 8 hours a day. i think it is bad because they always say how if you are on your cell phone to much it could cause cancer and people useing them for 7 to 8 hours A day is really bad. i think the negavtive would have to be that people being on the phone that long is dangerous to because some of that time the person could also be on the road driving and put other people in danger because they are on there cell phone.i dont think there is a positive about being on your cell phone for up to8 hours a day.

  5. Based on the article, it actually looks bad; it actually depends on what you do with it. When many children/teens are using electronics constantly, it actually can be worse. It can block the outside world and just leave them to themselves. Noncommunication is very bad. Some kids would rather watch TV rather than do their homework. But, like me, I do both. I personally can't do without my mp3. It actually helps me do my homework because it is really boring to do your homework; but to do your homework while also doing something you really like gets people to do more of their work. So, I guess it's just sort of how you personally look at it or how you personally handle it.

  6. I will admit, I am on the computer A LOT. And when I’m not, I’m texting a friend. But that’s just how things are nowadays. It’s what we grew up with! But I do go out and do social activities whenever I can still, so I don’t think it’s too big a deal for me. I do know there are kids out there who are basement dwellers who might burn up as soon as the sun hits their pasty white skin, not used to real light, just the artificial light from TV’s and Computers.
I think the trend is ‘ok’, people need to know when enough is enough and to get out of the house more! But, people don’t seem to recognize that and just want to sit there like a lump on a log and talk to people about things without actually doing them.
Positives? We all stay in touch, if we have a question its right at our fingertips, and it can teach you stuff(like the kid with his baby Einstein show). Negatives, OBESITY, basement dwelling moles who forgot what the sun was, and that people aren’t going out into the world and experiencing things for themselves.

  7. I am constantly on an electronic device all the time when I am outside of school. It being my cellphone, laptop, watching tv, or on one of my gamn systems. But even though I never put down my cellphone or never leave my laptop due to one of my favorite computer games, I have good grades in school. I have all A's except maybe two.

I don't think that the increase in using electronics is a bad thing. I think that if the children use it wisely and don't stay up all night playing games or watching their favorite tv show when they know they have school the next day then it shouldn't be that bad. But if the kids do use it in a negative way as in staying up all night or even up to three days at a time, like I had once done, then yes I do believe that electronics can cause problems for some families.

  8. i think i am below average because i dont talk alot or text on my cell phone. i think that the trend of increased use of electronics are bad, i think they are bad because it makes people lazy, and not want to go out side. i think that it could be a good trend because we could learn more from using the devices so often.

  9. I cant really say that it is a bad thing because when im not in school my cell phone never leaves my hand. i am constantly texting. How ever i do get pretty good grades. As for kids being on computers i am on mine a bit and i still get good grades. I think that kids can benifit and learn things from being on electronic devices. It all depends on the child.

How ever now a day you have xbox live and i think the people who tend to spend almost every minute on live besides school hours isnt helping the teenager out at all. I believe that their grades are dropping.

But i do believe that kids being on computers gives them knowledge beyong school. The bad part of this trend is that we dont want our future to consist of non stop gamers and computer people.

  10. I would say im average. I hardly ever get on the internet, unless im in school or need to do a project. I watch like 3 hours of tv a day. What puts me out there would be texting. Im lost without my phone. I txt pretty much everyday all day i would say, except in school.
I dont think its a bad thing unless your using it for gaming all the time or pointless things like that. Its fun to play some x box or wii here and there but not 5 hours a day. I dont know how people could stand that. I havent played a video game for I would say a month now so im good on that. Technology is good entertainment. But when you replace it for your socializing and hanging out with your friends then i would say thats a problem.

  11. If i would have to say I would probably be just average. I think the use of electronic devises is good and bad.
It is good it helps people with many things. I also think it is bad because of what the article says. I would agree that many kids grades are getting bad because of these electronics.

  12. I honestly think that I am above the average because I use my cell phone non-stop and I still get good grades in school, and I do have a t.v. in my room but I rarely watch it unless I'm completely bored or if there's a good movie/show on. Unlike most teenagers, I don't have a computer or internet access, not even an Ipod or anything as such, the only electronic device that destracts me is my cell and CD player. You can't really say weither this trend of devices increasing is a good or bad thing because it could go both ways. Some postives are that if you need to know something for school work then you can just flip up your phone or turn on the computer and find out in seconds, a negative is that most teens don't use that computer or cell for school work, they use it to watch funny videos on YouTube and keep in contact with people around the world.
