3/12/10 - Current Events Quiz / News Discussion

What's your News IQ?

To test your knowledge of prominent people and major events in the news,  take this short 12 question quiz. Then see how you did in comparison with 1,003 randomly sampled adults asked the same questions in a recent national survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.

Included in the current version of the quiz are several questions relating to the state of the economy as well as other prominent happenings and people in the news. For an analysis of the findings from the poll on the public's News IQ, read the full summary of findings. (No peeking! If you are going to take the quiz, do it first before reading the analysis.)

You'll also be able to compare your News IQ with the average scores of men and women; with college graduates as well as those who didn't attend college; with people who are your age as well as with younger and older Americans.

Are you more news-savvy than the average American?

In the comment section discuss one or more of the following issues:

1. What role the news should play in the lives of average Americans?
2. Why should we pay attention to what's going on in our community, state, nation and world?
3. What can we do to improve awareness of current events, especially among young people?
4. What can I do as a teacher to help students understand the news and be more interested in our world?

  1. Nope. Personally i dont care, at all, what is going on in the world today unless its crucial to my life. other than that i dont wanna hear about how and why people vote, or that obama gave a speech on healthcare last night, or that "kids today dont care about whats going on in the world." no kidding...

  2. Important news should play a big role in peoples lives, but the celebrity nonsense shouldnt be. The sad thing is that the celebrity business is what most people pay attention to.

We should pay attention to what is going on in the world because we have alot of communications and benefits.

I dont think there is much more that you can do to make people aware of the news around the world. We do current events all the time and eventually itll sink in to every body.

  3. i think we should pay attention to what is going on in our community because it is what is haooeing all around you so you should care what is happening. i would rather do stuff on the computer about curent events then watching it on the news. i think the news is boring and i dont really ike watching it so the computer would be better.i dont think you could help me very much to understand the news because i never uderstand it and it usualy never intersets me. so nothing could get me interested.

  4. I GOT A 69%! Top THAT! Only got two wrong and it was the political party majority in congress, and the Dow Jones industry one.

Well, Anyway, we reeeeally need to pay more attention to the news. If you don't like watching the news, 'cause its too boring, watch the Daily Show with the Stewart guy. I watch it sometimes, and it does a pretty good job at telling you whats going on in the political world in a funny way. But, still, politics is boring. So, I can't exactly BLAME people for not watching the news.

  5. The biggest event that the american poeple should be attenative to right now more that anything is the national debt. At this point in time, we owe the country of Japan over 644 billion dollars, and it is only getting bigger. We need to try and lower are debt and become more independant as a country.

  6. I think we should pay attention to the news. We all need to know whats going on in the world, so we can know what we should do to help or to fix the problems that are going on. We also need to know whats going on because it will affect us sooner or later. I think as a teacher you could make fun projects, and have them do fun quizes like this one to get people involved and want to know more aobut things going on in the world.

  7. I believe that we should pay attention more to what's going on in our community, state, nation and world because we depend on each other for certain things. For instance, take a look at Florida we get our tomatoes and other vegetables shipped over from them. Right now we have to pay more for tomatoes because Florida got hit with a freeze. Also, we get a lot of our dairy products from California and if something was to go wrong over there it would be nice to know. But it's not only food that we want to know. It's also about other things.
How can teachers help students understand the news better? I believe that if we have discussions about the news then we would. I don't believe that us students getting on the laptops and writing our opinions about what we think about a certain topic doesn't help. I believe that teachers need to go more into depth about the news if they want us kids to understand more.

  8. Noone can convince our younger population to to watch and pay attention to the news because kids are more worried about hanging out with their friends or spending time on xboxs and playstations. they dont care about politics and businesses or current events.

  9. I believe we should pay attention to the news around the world because we share money and such with the rest of the world so we should know what’s happening there and they should know what’s happening here, it’s courteous. We’re all intertwined with one another in the world so we should really know what’s going on in other places. People should really pay attention to the news so they’re not closed out on what’s happening and not clueless, and are informed. To improve awareness for us young people they shouldn’t make the news so boring, they should lifen it up and make it interesting instead of being straight forward about everything. They should also make the news focus on us young people every once in a while so it’s not always about adults and such.

  10. The news should play a good part in the average american because i think its good to know what is going on in the world. Maybe to inprove awareness at the begining of the school day the can turn the news on for students to watch. What you can do as a teacher is instead of a bunch of book work maybe we can do more activities. Like games or something, keep us interested.

  11. The news should inform us of current events that could effect our lives, not issues that are irrelavent to our everyday lives. For example Tiger Woods.
